Unelected Liberal Senators Attempting to Weaken New Accountability Law
October 26, 2006

The Liberals don’t seem to get it – they lost the last federal election because Canadians were fed up with Liberal corruption.

The Liberals don’t seem to get it – they lost the last federal election because Canadians were fed up with Liberal corruption.

Canadians elected Prime Minster Stephen Harper to clean up corruption in Ottawa, get tough on crime and get things done for families and taxpayers.

Canada’s New Government has taken action by introducing the toughest anti-corruption legislation in Canadian history.

But Liberals have used their majority in the unelected Senate to hold up the new government’s anti-corruption bill – the Federal Accountability Act – for the past 127 days.

And now Liberal Senators have proposed more than 100 amendments to the Accountability legislation that would weaken the new law to suit partisan Liberal Party purposes including:

  • Increasing the political donation limit from $1000 to $2,000;
  • Delaying implementation of the new Accountability laws until as late as 2008 - long after the Liberal leadership race is over;

  • Allowing all current political staffers to jump the queue and get priority over other applicants for public service jobs; and
  • Removing the Wheat Board from inclusion under the Access to Information Act.

Canada’s New Government has taken action by introducing a budget that provides more tax relief than the four previous Liberal budgets combined.

The Liberals opposed it. They think Canadians should continue paying too much tax.

Canada’s New Government has introduced a tough new anti-crime law that would put criminals who steal your car or burn down your house in jail.

The Liberals have worked with the NDP and the Bloc to defeat it. Apparently, Liberals believe convicted arsonists, robbers and car thieves should serve their time at home instead of in prison.

Clearly, Liberals are far out-of-step with Canadians.

So, while the Liberals continue to obstruct tough new anti-corruption laws, oppose lower taxes and defeat tough new anti-crime laws, Canada’s New Government will continue to listen to Canadians and get things done for families and taxpayers.
