About Edmonton-Strathcona
The sights and sounds of the Garneau Theatre, Whyte Avenue Street Sale, and Old Strathcona farmers market excite the senses in this historic but energetic riding. As the entertainment hub of Edmonton this riding boasts numerous shops, restaurants, and buskers. This riding is located in the south central part of the city of Edmonton. The riding is bordered on the north and west by the North Saskatchewan River. It is also bordered on the west by Whitemud creek, Fox drive, and 119 Street. On the southwest and southeast it is bordered by the Transmission Line and the CP Line and 82 Street, respectively. While Edmonton’s city limits border the riding on the northeast side. The riding was created in 1952 from Edmonton East and Edmonton West ridings. Major communities in the riding include Bonnie Doon, Garneau, Windsor Park, and Strathcona. The riding is home to a majority of Edmonton’s francophones. Bonnie Doon is the heart of the Franco-Albertan community and contains University of Alberta's Faculté Saint-Jean, the only Francophone university west of Manitoba. This riding is also home to the Mackenzie Health Sciences Center. As of the 2001 census Edmonton-Strathcona had a population of 98,974 and 74,014 electors. click image to enlarge |
